Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz (1 package) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for a deeper chocolate flavor, you can use Dutch-processed)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-4 tablespoons milk or cream, as needed for consistency

Method

  1. Beat the Butter and Cream Cheese: In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat together the softened butter and cream cheese until smooth and well combined.
  2. Add Cocoa Powder: Add the cocoa powder to the mixture and beat until fully incorporated, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Gradually Add Powdered Sugar: Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low speed until each addition is incorporated. Once all the powdered sugar has been added, beat on medium speed until the frosting is smooth.
  4. Flavor with Vanilla: Add the vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
  5. Adjust Consistency: If the frosting is too thick, add milk or cream, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. If it's too thin, add more powdered sugar, a little at a time, until it thickens up.
  6. Final Beat: Once all ingredients are added and the frosting is of the desired consistency, beat on high speed for an additional minute to make the frosting light and fluffy.
